Climate Change Increases Flood Risks in Azerbaijan

This week at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 29), presentations were given on the topic of “Natural Disasters and Climate Change: Natural Disasters Caused by Climate Change in Azerbaijan”. Betül Sümer, a participant of the Turkic World Monitoring Centre, shared the impact of climate change on the increase in natural disasters in Azerbaijan with the participants in her presentation. Sümer highlighted the risk of floods and droughts in Azerbaijan, which she said are among the most damaging disasters to the economy. She also noted that the risk of drought is increasing with the increase in temperatures, and that 76% of the land in Azerbaijan is at risk in this sense. The presentation also addressed the increasing risk of drought and its negative impact on water resources, food production and price increases in the livestock sector, which constitute the most significant challenges posed by climate change in Azerbaijan. Sümer concluded by emphasising the need for adaptation to climate change and the importance of implementing measures to address the issue.
